This CO2 cost calculator estimates carbon cost from energy use, emission factor and CO2 price. When floor area is entered, it also applies the German residential ten-step allocation model for rented homes. The free percentage split remains visible as a separate scenario.

UnitsMetric units are the international default. Switch to US or UK units for consumption unit, emissions factor and floor area when your comparison uses them.
Annual use from a heating bill, energy certificate or consumption data.
Use the unit that matches your emission factor.
Example: natural gas is often roughly 0.2 kg CO2 per kWh. Use the factor from your bill when available.
Germany: for 2026, the German national CO2 price is in a $55–$65 per tonne corridor; $65 is a cautious scenario value. Adjust for other years or countries.
With floor area, the calculator derives CO2 intensity per area unit and applies the German residential ten-step allocation model.
Scenario only. The statutory German split is calculated automatically from CO2 intensity per area unit when floor area is entered.
FAQ

FAQ about CO2 Cost Calculator

How are CO2 costs split between tenant and landlord?

For rented residential buildings in Germany, the split depends on yearly CO2 emissions per area unit. The calculator derives the step automatically when consumption, emission factor and floor area are entered.

Can I still change the tenant share manually?

Yes. The free scenario split remains available for comparisons, but it does not replace the statutory German residential allocation.

Which CO2 price should I use?

Use the price that matches the year, country, energy source and bill context. For Germany, the 2026 corridor is €55–€65 per tonne; later years or other countries can differ.

Why does floor area matter?

Floor area converts total yearly CO2 emissions into a value per area unit. That value is the basis for the German ten-step allocation model.
