Heating Cost Calculator
Calculate annual heating cost, monthly average cost, cost per square meter and the share of energy and fixed costs.
Calculate now
Use this heating cost calculator to estimate your total annual and monthly heating cost. It combines energy use, energy price, base fee, maintenance and additional fixed cost for a much more realistic total picture than a simple kWh-only calculation.
Heating Cost Calculator: Compare heating costs realistically and find savings
Use the result as a scenario comparison, not only as a single number. For energy calculators, runtime, price assumptions, efficiency and seasonal effects usually drive the biggest differences.
How to use the result better
- Calculate one realistic and one efficient scenario.
- Compare monthly and annual values so small daily amounts are not underestimated.
- Check inputs against real tariff, consumption or device data.
Common mistake
The most common mistake is an overly optimistic usage profile: runtimes too short, prices too low or missing base costs.
What to check next
If the result is high, compare related calculators for electricity, heating, PV, heat pumps or CO₂ to find the biggest lever.
How exact is the result?
It is a solid estimate when inputs are realistic. Bills may differ because of tariff details, weather, usage and supplier factors.
Why calculate several scenarios?
Scenarios show which input has the strongest impact, and that is usually where optimization should start.
Understand heating costs
Compare heating costs by usage, space and energy type
The heating cost calculator shows monthly and yearly costs. For more clarity, use additional calculators for gas, apartments and cost per square meter.
Useful heating calculators
How to compare heating costs
Separate usage and space: Apartment costs and cost per square meter answer different questions.
Consider the energy type: Gas, electricity and heat pumps follow different price and usage patterns.
How the result is calculated
Annual energy cost = annual consumption × price per kWh
Annual fixed cost = base fee + maintenance + other fixed costs
Total annual heating cost = energy cost + fixed cost
Monthly heating cost = total annual heating cost ÷ 12
Heating cost per m² per year = total annual heating cost ÷ living area
Effective cost per kWh = total annual heating cost ÷ annual consumption
Worked example
Example: 14,000 kWh × €0.12 results in €1,680 in pure energy cost. With a €180 base fee, €120 maintenance and €60 in additional fixed cost, total fixed cost comes to €360. This produces total heating cost of €2,040 per year or €170 per month. With 90 m² of living area, that equals about €22.67 per m² per year.
What does this heating cost calculator calculate?
The calculator first determines pure energy cost from your annual consumption and price per kWh. It then adds yearly fixed cost such as base fees, maintenance and other recurring charges. This gives you a more realistic estimate of total heating cost per year, per month and per square meter.
Why do fixed costs matter so much?
Many users focus only on the unit price per kWh. In practice, however, fixed cost can be very important. Base fees, maintenance and similar recurring charges often remain even if you reduce consumption. That is why the calculator shows energy-cost and fixed-cost shares separately.
Why is cost per square meter useful?
Heating cost per square meter is useful when comparing apartments, homes or different usage situations. During moves, renting decisions, renovations or general budgeting, this value is often more useful than absolute yearly cost alone.
Which result metrics are especially useful?
The most useful outputs are not only total annual and monthly heating cost, but also energy cost separately, fixed cost separately, effective cost per kWh and cost per square meter. Together they provide a much better picture of where your heating cost actually comes from.
When is this calculator especially useful?
The heating cost calculator is especially useful for household budgeting, tariff comparisons, first renovation thoughts, housing comparisons and rough estimates of rising energy cost. It can also help you prepare for discussions with landlords, owners or energy advisors.
How should you use the result?
Use the result as a solid estimate, not as a binding bill. For actual billing, utility disputes, detailed consumption analysis or legally relevant assessments, your real invoices, contract data and professional advice remain the relevant basis.
Frequently asked questions
What is included in heating costs?
Heating costs include not only pure energy cost, but often also base fees, maintenance, metering services and other fixed charges.
Why are my heating costs higher than just consumption times price?
Because real-life heating cost often includes additional fixed charges. This calculator includes those alongside energy use.
Why is cost per square meter useful?
It helps you compare apartments or homes more easily and relates heating cost more realistically to the size of the property.
Is this a real heating bill?
No. The calculator only provides a general and simplified estimate for orientation and comparison.
Can I test different heating-cost scenarios with it?
Yes. That is one of its main strengths. You can adjust price, consumption and fixed cost and immediately see the effect.
Is the calculator useful for tenants too?
Yes. It works well for first estimates, comparisons and budgeting, but it does not replace an actual utility or service-charge statement.
